El grupo R.E.M. y el canal MTV nacieron al mismo tiempo, y este filme pesquisa ese alumbramiento, y luego sigue su historia paralela a lo largo de una adolescencia curiosa y una madurez exitosa. Archivos de presentaciones en los estudios de la cadena, su Unplugged, entrevistas y tomas descartadas construyen esta historia compartida entre 1980 y 2011. «Trabajamos muy duro, tuvimos suerte, las cosas salieron bien… en realidad, magníficas» (Michael Stipe).
